Discover the city ⇾Vannes is officially designated as a City of Artistic and Historic Interest and it has a wealth of outstanding monuments and cultural sites. Expert tour guides arrange visits of the ancient walled city centre. Vannes has two nationally recognised and funded museums in the historic city centre. The 'Musée d'archéologie du Morbihan' which is situated in a 15th century mansion is dedicated to the history of the Morbihan area from prehistoric times up to the present day. The city's other museum is called La Cohue and is located opposite Saint-Pierre cathedral: it contains a wide-ranging set of collections including contemporary and figurative paintings as well as paintings by Breton artists etc...
Vannes cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral which is dedicated to Saint Peter. It was built in the Gothic style on the site of the old Norman cathedral. Its construction lasted five hundred years from the 15th to the 19th century, and if you take account of the Norman clock tower that was saved from the former building its construction has taken seven hundred years. Please note that visits are suspended during religious services.
Due to its geographical situation Vannes offers a huge range of outdoor activities. The options range from water-borne activities such as boating, sailing or canoeing, to land-based activities such as golf, horse-riding, cycling and hiking, and also flying lessons, tandem parachuting, or seaplane trips. Whatever you're into, you'll be spoilt for choice!
